Breaking news

Sharing news is important, but can be challenging if some students want to talk a lot and some don't have any news to share. You could use some of the following ideas from The Oral Language Book to support students with sharing their weekend/holiday highlights or lowlights, orally.

• Use the Doughnut circles (page 42) to share weekend/holiday highlights. Students could share their highlight/lowlight and sometimes share their previous partner's idea to encourage active listening.
• Students can share weekend/holiday highlights in Listening triads (page 43).
• Use the Talking strip - News (PM41 and 42) to share news in pairs/small groups.
• Students could work in small groups and select someone's news to recreate using drama. Create a scene (page 86) or Skits with four words (page 93) would both work well.
