‘Punctuation points’ is a fun activity for students to check the accuracy of their punctuation in a piece of writing by scoring points.
There is an extension version for students working with more sophisticated punctuation.
Activity
After writing, students review their punctuation and check for accuracy (Self-check). They can then work with a partner to score their punctuation using Punction points.
Before using Punctuation points
Check students know how to use the punctuation you are reviewing. You can analyse punctuation in exemplar texts during reading time and use mini-lessons to explicitly teach punctuation skills. Model how to complete the activity using an exemplar text.
There are lots of mini-lesson ideas for teaching punctuation in The Writing Book (pages 87-90) and in The Poetry Book (pages 91-94). There are also posters that can be used as visual reminders.
